MSU Kendo club members and students participated at the 2nd Annual Mid West Kendo Federation Student Tournament. It was a fun and exciting experience for many of the participants and the MSU kendo family members to help organize and bring forth this tournament to MSU.

Saturday the night before the tournament featured a godo keiko where kenshi from all over the Midwest came to practice and have lots of fun.

After the meals came the team matches, where the MSU A team which consisted of:

1.      H. Takeuchi (senpo)

2.      J. Ha (chuken)

3.      B. Kim (taisho)

lost to the Choyokan team  with 7 seconds left in the final match.

The end result for the team matches were:

1.      Detroit A

2.      Battle Creek

3.      University of Wisconsin B

3.   Choyokan

At the end of the tournament there was also another godo keiko where everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

The tournament it self was a success, and helped our club expand and gain valuable experience for the future.  On behalf of the MSU Kendo Club, I would like to thank all of the competitors and the volunteers who made this tournament  possible.

Following the testing Sakaguchi sensei, master instructor of the Tokyo metropolitan police held a very good seminar on basic kendo emphasizing suburi uchikomi and kirikaeshi.  This was followed by a general godo keiko.
Sunday featured both individual and team competitions.  In the individual competitions, Wendy Chen earned a third place medal in the women's division, while Jordan Holmgren earned third place in the 1-dan division.
The MSU Team, consisted of

We managed a fairly easy first round victory which brought us up against MSU arch-rival University of Michigan.  The Spartan team managed an exciting come from behind victory against the Wolverines in a team match that was tied after the regulation five matches and therefore had to go to Daihyo sen (a playoff match).  In our third match we fell victim to the eventual tournament winners, the Detroit A team of
  1. Ryota Takahashi 4-dan
  2. Hideki Tani 5-dan
  3. Fumiaki Murakami 5-dan
  4. Shingo Morita 4-dan

Matt managed to hard fought hikiwake (draw match) against Morita sensei wile the rest of us lost 0-2.  All participants should be congratulated on a great effort.
