Saturday February 16, 2008, Jin Wook "Ryan" Kim and Amy Dawson participated in
the promotional testing at Seaholm High School in Birmingham, MI. Congratulations
to both of them. Ryan for gaining 1-kyu and Amy for achieving shodan. Following the
promotional testing, Amy, Ryan and I participated in a seminare and practice led
by Teramoto sensei. Winner of the ZNKR championship and captain of the Osaka prefectural
police team that won the Japan Police championships.
The next day, the team of Jin Wook Kim, Wendy Chen, Ron Fox, Matt Palmer and Amy Dawson
competed in both the individual and team competitions of the 2008 Detroit Rensei taikai.
This tournament is the 10th time Detroit has hosted this event. Ryan managed a 3d place in the
Mudansha division. While the team was knocked out in the first round by a strong Georgia Kendo Alliance
team, all members competed hard, and showed their best kendo, as well as showing the strong
fundamental kendo that M.S.U. practices.

Ron Fox, Wendy Chen, and Mathew Palmer travelled to Madison
Wisconsin August August 3-5 for the MWKF summer camp. The summer
camp was taught by Yamanaka Shigeki sensei, and Saito Shigeki sensei.
Both sensei are 8-dan Kyoshi, with Yamanaka sensei the winner of the
2005 All Japan 8-dan Championships. Camp was very instructive and difficult.
All had chances to practice with both senseis, as well as opportunities
for basic and waza practices. Pictures for the camp are available on
the
Battle Creek Kendo Club Website

The MSU summer camp was a great succsess in spite of the heat.
The camp featured three practice sessions. The first, prior to
lunch practiced basic actions. After adjourning for lunch and
a taiko performance (Thanks Brian, Mayumi and other members of the
taiko team), we studied
Bokuto Ni Yoru Kendo Kihon-waza Keiko-ho, a kata that was first taught
in 2003. These kata are, unlike the Zen Nihon Kendo Kata, a systematic
curriculum in kendo. Tagawa sensei, however had us practice the kata
actions with shinai, bogu and contact so that we could better evaluate
our cutting actions. After a short break, the final session was a
practice of several wazas in settings that varied from a basic
action practice to application in more realistic settings.
The camp concluded with a mawari geiko. For more information
about the
Bokuto Ni Yoru Kendo Kihon-Waza Keiko-ho click the previous link.

The All Michigan practice, held April 9 was a big success,
approximately 45 participants attended from the Detroit Kendo Dojo,
EMU kendo club, U-M Kendo club, CMU Kendo Club, MSU Kendo Club,
Battle Creek Kendo Kai, and Grand Rapids Toyoda Center kendo dojo.
Y. Tagawa sensei of Detroit conducted the practice. The practice
was a very comprehensive one starting from basics and moving up
to several more advanced wazas before going on to uchi-komi and
ji-geiko. Participants were fairly unanimous that this event would
be a good one to have more than once a year. We will therefore
look into holding one in Fall 2006.
Following the practice, about 1/2 of the participants in the
practice met for the 'second practice' at Damons. Food was good,
company was good, and we all had a good chance both to get to know each
other better, as well as to make some plans for the future of
Michigan Kendo.
Posted by Ron on 03-23-06 MSU will host the second annual all Michigan Kendo practice April 9, IM circle 2nd floor gym from 12:30am to 2:30pm. If you are a member of a dojo in Michigan and have not already heard about this from your sensei, ask. The head instructor of the event will be Yoshiteru "Duke" Tagawa Sensei, 8-dan Detroit Kendo Dojo.
Posted by Ron on 03-23-06 Several members of the club competed in the 2006 Detroit Taikai. B. Kim won 3'd place in the Mudansha adult division. I had the pleasure of being assigned to judge on his court and am very proud of the way he conducted his shiai. While we failed to gain any other awards, members who competed in the previous year, on the whole went further into the tournament than last year. I think this is a tribute to the hard work that everyone has been putting in and one of the many signs I see of improvement in everyone's kendo. A photo gallery of this event is available here.
Posted by Ron on 03-23-06 The following members of the MSU kendo club passed promotional testings on February 18, 2006 at Detroit. Ron Southwick: 1-kyu, Burm/Billy/Cristiano Kim shodan. Congratulations! Now that you have achieved this goal its time to tighten your himo and practice even hader for the next goal

Posted by Ron on 12-27-05 - As 2005 winds down I wanted to take the time to wish all who read this a happy, healthy, and prosperous new year. We have done a great deal as a club during this 2005. Now that Michigan has its own 8-dan in Tagawa sensei, I'm looking forward to even greater progress and achievements in 2006.
Posted by Ron on 12-27-05 - The MSU kendo club participated in the Midwest Kendo Federation tournament held in LaCrosse Wisconsin in November. Unfortunately I've only now gotten around to posting the pictures from that event. See here.
Posted by Ron on 12-27-05 - Congratulations to Tagawa sensei of the Detroit kendo dojo. Tagawa sensei passed his test for 8-dan at the Tokyo testing this fall. The test for 8-dan is very strict, with very few passes each time. This is a tremendous achievement for Tagawa sensei.

Posted by Chris on 02-14-06 - As you can see, Gary has joined me on the MSU Kendo webmaster list. We will both try our best to update the website and make it a little better. I plan on giving it a little facelift and adding a lot more info that I have accumulated since I last updated. Thank-you!
Posted by Chris on 02-13-06 - I updated the practice times and any other info that has changed since last semester. We have some new officers, but I am waiting until that is finalized before I post their names. I also will try and re-design the website this week. It is in great need and I hope to improve it greatly. Thank-you.
Posted by Chris on 10-05-05 - It seems that we now have PHP installed on our server. And, it is now running and working. In fact, all the main pages and some of the sub-pages are now in php. You cannot see most of what I did, as it was php includes, but it helped and will help me and Fox Sensei out a lot. As usual, if you have suggestions or whatever; email me, Chris Meyers, at msukendo@gmail.com.
