| Dojo News. Kata practice in September was well attended but Matsuura was again working. Barry and Stefano worked hard at #1-3 and began # 4. Bob, Atsushi and I worked on the entire kata. A new fellow came, Bob, so he had his first real kendo lesson: reigei saho. Next practice is Oct 9th, 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. |
The sensei tapped to teach were Yamaguchi (SCKF), Kanno (PNKF), Kato (GNEUSKF), Hooper (AEUSKF). Also helping were Pat Murosako, Henry Asai, Dick Anderson, Tom Bolling, Pam Parker, and Russell Ichimura. The sensei were most concerned about 2 things. They felt most people were not doing #3 (uke nagashi) in the seitei gata correctly. Also they wanted to spend some time teaching more about koryu kata. Friday afternoon we divided into 3 groups. Group 1 was for mostly beginners who weren't ready for koryu yet. So they studied seitei. Group 2 went with Hooper sensei to work on jikiden kata, and group 3 went with Kato sensei to work on shinden kata. I studied with Kato. I learned a lot about the first 7 kata in Oomori ryu. Saturday was more instruction, then the iaido tournament, followed by more instruction. Sunday was a big open practice followed by a testing. There was over 80 people in only one big gym. Sensei stressed if you have shinken, and a iaito, please just use the iaito for now ! Also traveling out west, were three others from the MWKF, Tom Okawara from the Choyokan dojo, Jerry Morishige and Shigemi Matsuyama from the Chicago kendo dojo. Shigemi lives in Milwaukee, and travels down to practice with Jerry. To see some photos and read more click here. |
Chicago Taikai-Sept. 27-29 I have never missed any taikai held in Chicago since 1983, and I had no plans on missing this one. I had my room reserved for weeks and had plans to leave work a little early to drive down to make sure I could attend the MWKF Board meeting early Friday evening. I even had plans to stop and pick up Atsushi, to carpool with me and split the room. By Thursday a.m. though I felt something weird going on in my upper belly, I ignored it...went to work, but by 12:30, I was in such pain I drove myself directly to the ER at our local hospital. Four hours later I was released. I spent the next 3 days on the couch barely moving. My first brush with gastritis! My doc suspects an ulcer. Gee whiz, maybe you can't spend you're entire life eating and drinking just whatever you want! Atsushi went down to Chicago alone, although and he did very well in the tournament, made it to the quarter finals before being eliminated, and best of all, he passed his sandan exam. Congratulations Soosh ! |
