Dojo News  Kata practice in June was just a bit better than May. Bob and I worked with Barry and Stefano. Welcome to the new guy, though......Steve Stokes. It just so happened the first practice he could attend (ever) was our once-a-month kata only day.

Summer camp Report.....Held once again on the campus of Kalamazoo College, our summer camp was really a "Family Affair". We had no outside sensei or teachers from other federations. Our leaders this year were 6th dan Sakamoto, Kikuchi, and Ishihara. They were backed up by 7th dan Matsumoto and Maeda. We did have a couple of campers who traveled all the way from Upstate New York.

About 35 people were in attendance this year. Of course the weather was very hot, you almost can count on that, even though we were a month earlier than normal. I hit the sack after everybody was in and had a room about 2:00 a.m. Sat morning. Up for breakfast at 8:00. The first practice was at 9:30. We first announced this year the weekend was dedicated to Izui sensei, who passed in January of this year. He started the summer camp tradition way back in 1981.
To start we divided up, Kikuchi took the advanced, in this case it was nidan and up. Sakamoto took the shodan and below. Everybody worked on basics in the morning, with and without bogu. After lunch, we started with kata from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. and then back into bogu from 3:15 to 4:30. We had a chance to jiyu-geiko with the sensei. For more report and photos click here.
This is the crew that participated in summer camp from our club. Left to right: Atsushi Ikenobu, Bob Mack, Yours truly, Kee Hui Wong, Jason Mills and Barry Poulson.  I'd like to say a big THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP, Jason & Barry ! Without you two, it would have been impossible, especially because of Matsuura sensei ill-timed flu-bug that kept him down and out, unable to come to camp.

Each month I'll have a quote from Golf and Sports Psychologist Dr. Bob Rotello.  Notice its similarities to kendo.

GOLFER'S CORNER  " You can't make the journey from average player to scratch player in an armchair. You can't do it just by reading books and you can't do it by simply by watching videos. It will take practice and persistence."

Dr. Bob Rotello has numerous books on improving your golf game available. Check it out at Amazon.com
