October 2002

Dojo News.  Kata practice in October was a private lesson for Barry. Next practice is, well, should we bother?  Nov 9th, 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Another poor showing will result in a canceling of December's slot.

The Big 30 for comes for Matsuura! On October 12th, following our regular practice, we had a surprise Birthday party for Matsuura sensei. Right at the end of class, his wife Sonia waltzed in with balloons and a big Home-made birthday cake. We then popped out the cooler with the drinks, and everybody ran out to their cars to have a small pot-luck, and PIZZA WAS DELIVERED !  Oh Yeah, the food was gone in 20 minutes.

We decided ( a little late) to all chip in, and replace his Hasegawa carbon graphite shinai that disappeared rather mysteriously Nov. 11th,  2000 at the Chicago taikai. So we are secretly collecting contributions around him. But alas, it wasn't in by UPS in time, so we faked a cheap shinai, with a cardboard logo taped on it for a laugh. We assured him he really has a real one coming......

Showing up that Sunday night was: Bob, Shoosh, Craig D., Jason (Jackson), Jason (Toledo), Luke, Scott, and new guys Bob C. and Craig S. It was especially nice to see Jason Winkle and Robin show up.

Takashi gets Married!
I received this postcard from the happy groom late in July, but I lost it for a while. But as you can see Takashi has found a lovely lady named Aiko, and is completely smitten. For those of you who don't remember the 3 Masumoto brothers, they moved to the U.S. when they were in elementary school. They quickly adapted to American life, but their father wanted them to continue doing kendo. He knew the value of budo training, as he was a judoka himself. They were so good at kendo, they basically always ended up at the top at a shiai. But the kicker is, many times I had to enter  them in the adult divisions, even when they were 10 to 14 years old. Back then, many tournaments had no youth divisions, as there was no interest in kendo by the youth here in the Midwest, Interest normally started in college. So they faced and routinely beat college-age people.

Each month I'll have a quote from Golf and Sports psychologist Dr. Bob Rotello.  Notice its similarities to kendo.
